Well, even though there’s technically still a month left of winter; it sure feels like spring is already here. Days are longer, warmer, birds are singing and we’re all so very tired of the many layers we’ve been having to wear during the past couple of months; which is why there couldn’t be a better time to get back on court and that’s where All Star Tennis has got you covered! On Monday 25th February the second half of our spring term kicks off with a 6-week block of adult and junior courses, where alongside the courses that we usually run, there will be a couple of new projects that are being launched and that we expect will become a very important part of the All Star Tennis programme. These are the Women’s Team Practice Social Tennis, the Talent ID Community Squads and the Wandsworth Common Monkeys Reception Squad.
The Women’s Team Practice will be a 2-hour session run on Thursday evening by King George’s Park new head coach, Letitia Kruger, where strong intermediate and advanced female players will get to improve their tactical knowledge of the game, the biomechanics of their movements on court and their physical conditioning; all in live singles and doubles match situations. These sessions are invitation only and will run from 7 to 9 PM every Thursday at King George’s Park.
The Talent ID Programme Squads are the product of a few months of work with local schools that our coaches have visited and where they’ve run taster coaching sessions to identify children that showed innate talent for playing tennis, that were then invited to take part in this new project. These lessons are funded by the All Star Tennis Trust and aim to develop grassroots tennis in the borough of Wandsworth. The lessons are invitation only and will take place from 4 to 5 PM on Tuesdays at Tooting Common and on Thursdays at King George’s Park.
The Wandsworth Common Monkeys Reception Squad seeks to get children aged 4 and 5, in touch with more demanding coaching sessions from an early age, which will help accelerate their learning and allow them to handle a lot more information about the sport by the time they move on to older age groups. This session works on an invitation-only basis and is aimed for those kids who have the concentration and physical attributes required to cope with the higher level of coaching involved, it will be taking place from 4 to 5 PM on Thursdays at Wandsworth Common.
So here it is, whether you’re a regular joining any of the courses we’ve been running for years or a new player taking part in one of these new sessions, the tennis court is the place to be this spring. Don’t leave it until the summer and get a head start on all the people you play against, they’ll be sorry they didn’t do the same later in the year!
And don’t forget Summer Term Priority Booking opens on Tuesday 26th February, with new players able to book from Tuesday 5th March
